a-z of sport: Gymnastics

Gymnastics covers many different disciplines. All are skilled and challenging and require physical strength, agility and co-ordination.

Gymnastics helps improve your flexibility, co-ordination and balance as well as boosting concentration. Having a go at gymnastics can benefit all ages; from toddlers learning motor skills to adults looking for a different way to work out.

Under the overall description of gymnastics lie the individual disciplines and activities of:

  • Men's artistic Gymnastics (includes high bar, parallel bars, rings, floor, vault and pommel horse)
  • Women's Artistic gymnastics (includes uneven bars, beam, floor and vault)
  • Rhythmic Gymnastics
  • Trampoline and Tumbling Gymnastics
  • Acrobatic Gymnastics

British Gymnastics provides a national directive and structure for the sport; delivering a range of opportunities across the age spectrum to take part and stay in gymnastics, as well as developing talent and delivering top-level success.

Gymnastics is an accessible and inclusive sport offering opportunities to all ability levels and ethnic groups within a range of controlled learning environments. It promotes an active and healthy lifestyle and is recognised as forming the basis for physical literacy by developing fundamental movement skills.

Wesport works alongside the National Governing Body of Gymnastics to create and develop opportunities across the West of England. Visit British Gymnastics for more information and to find a local club, course or event near you.
