What is Active Bystander Training?

Did you know that in a 2021 report by Edge Hill University, 73% of participants had experienced at least one form of abuse in sport in the UK as a child. This kind of behaviour can start small, but sometimes it can be difficult to know how to challenge this in a safe and effective way.

Bristol Girls Can is delighted to partner with the NWG Network to offer Active Bystander training to individuals and organisations who engage and support women and girls to be active.

The programme equips participants with the skills to tackle ‘locker-room’ culture, sexual harassment and different forms of sexual and domestic abuse across the sport and physical activity sector. This active bystander programmes takes participants through the four key stages required to become an active bystander and change harmful cultures: noticing, interpreting as a problem, assuming responsibility and taking the appropriate action.

The programme takes the form of a 6-hour training programme delivered across two x 3 hour sessions and trains people working in sport and physical activities to be ‘active bystanders’ and positive role models who can intervene safely and effectively when they witness unacceptable behaviour, from sexist jokes or demeaning “locker-room” banter to direct abuse and hate crimes.

Session 1: 5th June 1pm – 4pm

Both sessions take place at Hengrove Park Leisure Centre.
