Wesport was delighted to partner with Kevin from the NWG Network to deliver Active Bystander training. The session explored why it’s important to call out misogynistic, racist, and homophobic language and behaviours. What may start as “banter” within your sports club, if left unchallenged, can escalate into more serious abuse and harm.
The Pyramid of Harm – Poor behaviour does escalate
Kevin introduced the Pyramid of Harm, which clearly illustrated the important role an active bystander plays in preventing harm. By challenging inappropriate behaviour early or reporting concerns to the appropriate channels, we can help create a culture of safe sport and prevent these behaviours from escalating.
How to Challenge Poor Behaviour: The Four D’s of being an Active Bystander in Sport
A useful approach Kevin highlighted was the importance of finding allies. For example, if you witness unacceptable behaviour, speak to others who may have seen or heard the same incident. This can give you confidence and support when addressing the issue. If you do not feel comfortable challenging the behaviour directly, you can report it to someone who can, such as the welfare officer, your national governing body or the relevant authorities.

- Direct
- Distract
- And Document
“I’m Okay, Coach” – Resources about Challenging Poor Behaviour
Some excellent resources were shared during this session including videos that showed the power of the bystander and a good example of a young person who has been struggling and what you can do to help and support. The “I’m Okay, Coach” video below has been developed by the NWG. Please take a moment to watch this and consider how this coach was an active bystander.
